Muskrats and Cardinals, May 27, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters
Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus - a semiaquatic rodent native to North America, an introduced species in parts of Europe, Asia, and South America

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 18, 2017
I was astonished to see two Muskrats swimming in a drainage ditch leading to a small marshy area. I was looking straight into bright sunlight for this photo. The other Muskrat was farther down the ditch in a semi-shady spot.

A Muskrat's fur is medium brown when dry, but looks much darker when wet. They were feeding on bits of vegetation floating in the water.

A grumpy pair of Cardinals waiting for the feeders to be refilled!

Have a wonderful week-end!

  1. Hello Lea, at first looking at the fur I thought it was a small dog swimming. Neat sighting of the muskrats. The cardinal couple are pretty. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

  2. Good to see your Muskrats Lea. I'm not sure but I think we had feral/escaped ones here but they were eradicated. Cardinals are always a welcome sight.

  5. Such cute shots of a muskrat. When I was a child, I once had one walk right up to me and I picked it up and took it home. gave it a bubble bath and after dinner I told my parents. we went out to see it and it was dead in the box. My dad thought it was rabid. Don't think I have seen one since that day

  7. Love the looks on the faces of the cardinals. They do seem to be saying "Where is our food?" Also enjoyed the photo of the muskrat.

  9. Yes, it's like their expressions are telling the photographer "Where's our kibbles and bits?" lol
